If a capsule filling machine is crushing, bending or failing to close capsules, the capsules themselves are not necessarily the problem. Start by checking machine size, alignment and operating pressure.
1. The machine and capsule sizes do not match
This is one of the first things to check. A machine designed for Size 3 capsules should be used with Size 3 capsules. Even visually similar sizes have different dimensions.
2. Capsules are not seated correctly
If bodies or caps are tilted before filling or closing, pressure may be applied unevenly. Make sure all capsules are correctly positioned before operating the closing mechanism.
3. Too much closing force
More pressure is not always better. Excessive force can deform or damage shells, particularly when alignment is already imperfect.
4. Powder is preventing closure
Overfilling or leaving powder around the capsule rim can prevent the cap and body from joining correctly. Remove excess powder before the closing stage.
5. Storage conditions can affect capsule shells
Hard capsules should be stored according to the supplier’s instructions. Inappropriate heat, humidity or very dry conditions can affect handling characteristics.
6. Machine tolerances and quality vary
Two machines sold for the same nominal capsule size may not perform identically. Check plate alignment, hole dimensions and closing action if problems continue across multiple capsule batches.
A simple troubleshooting order
Confirm the capsule size → confirm the machine size → check seating and alignment → reduce excessive force → avoid overfilling → check capsule storage → inspect the machine itself.
