Choosing a capsule filling machine starts with one rule that is easy to miss: the machine must match the capsule size. A Size 0 machine is designed for Size 0 capsules; it is not a universal machine for every capsule size.
Why capsule size matters
Empty capsules differ in diameter and length. The holes, alignment plate and closing mechanism of a manual filling machine are therefore made for a particular size. Using the wrong combination can cause poor alignment, damaged shells or capsules that do not close correctly.
Which machine size do I need?
First choose the capsule size required for your powder and dose. Then select a filling machine made for that exact capsule size. Common human capsule sizes include 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
24-hole, 100-hole or 400-hole?
Capacity affects workflow rather than capsule compatibility. A small machine can suit occasional filling and testing, while a larger manual machine is more practical when preparing larger batches. The correct choice depends on how many capsules you intend to fill at a time.
HPMC or gelatin capsules?
Many correctly sized machines can be used with both hard gelatin and HPMC capsules, but shell dimensions and manufacturing tolerances matter. Always check the machine specification and use capsules of the stated size.
What about DRcaps®?
DRcaps® are delayed-release HPMC capsules. As with other hard capsules, use a filling machine designed for the corresponding capsule size and handle the shells carefully during separation and closing.
