Short answer: A multi-strain probiotic does not behave as one organism. Different strains can have very different tolerance to acid, bile, oxygen, storage and processing. More strains therefore does not automatically mean better gastric survival.
Does stomach acid affect every probiotic strain equally?
No. Laboratory comparisons show substantial differences between probiotic taxa and strains. Some B. animalis subsp. lactis strains are comparatively acid tolerant, while other Bifidobacterium strains can lose viability more rapidly. Lactobacillus strains also show strain-specific responses.
Are 20 strains automatically better than 5 strains?
No. Strain count alone does not establish product quality or clinical usefulness. Relevant considerations include the identity and evidence for each strain, viable count through shelf life, compatibility between ingredients, storage and the delivery system.
Why delivery technology matters
Research on targeted probiotic delivery shows that protecting bacteria from gastric conditions can materially change viability for acid-sensitive formulations. For dry powders that are appropriate for re-encapsulation, DRcaps® delayed-release capsules are one formulation option. They are delayed-release HPMC capsules, not a claim that every probiotic requires pharmaceutical enteric coating.
FAQ
Is a higher CFU always better?
Not necessarily. CFU is important, but it does not replace strain identification, stability, evidence and delivery considerations.
Should every multi-strain probiotic use delayed release?
No. The appropriate delivery system depends on the specific strains and formulation. Delayed release is an option rather than a universal requirement.
How do I choose an empty capsule size?
Use the volume and bulk density of the powder. See our Capsule Size Guide.
