Polymer science and engineering have opened a new era of functional development, which offers the potential for selecting the right capsule for different APIs. Capsugel® Vcaps® Plus capsules represent a unique and valuable contribution—they dissolve quickly and predictably at different pH levels and are independent of cations or other food components. Under these conditions, they perform like gelatin.

They also offer additional advantages, particularly a lower moisture content, which makes them suitable for hygroscopic and moisture-sensitive drugs and manufacturing processes. Because of the low moisture sensitivity, you have a range of storage options with less chance for brittleness or breakage.

HPMC capsules are inert and robust against cross-linking or the effects of extreme storage conditions. They show excellent mechanical properties for manufacturing and come from a renewable, plant-based resource that’s accepted by the global regulatory community. Excellent Machinability and Mechanical Stability

Capsugel® Vcaps® Plus capsules have lower weight variations than first generation HPMC capsules and a weight-range profile that more closely mimics that of a gelatin capsule. Electron micrographs of Capsugel® Vcaps® Plus capsules show that they have a smooth and even surface, which suggest higher quality performance in manufacturing (2). They have been thoroughly tested on a variety of high-speed capsule filling machines and demonstrate excellent performance with fewer than 0.01% rejects. In a recent review of more than 30 filling operations across a range of intermittent motion, continuous motion and semi-automatic machines, the Capsugel® Vcaps® Plus capsules had an average yield rate of 99.86%, with a range from 99.782% to 100.0%.

Gelatin-Like Dissolution by Eliminating Gelling Agents

Secondary gelling agents and ionic gel promoters – used by some other HPMC capsules – may slow down release of active ingredients. Capsugel® Vcaps® Plus capsules are made through a proprietary manufacturing process that eliminates the need for gelling systems. They disintegrate and release their contents independent of pH and ionic strength of the test media.

What is the difference between Capsugel® Vcaps® Plus capsules and the first generation HPMC capsules?

The first generation HPMC capsules developed were manufactured by a process similar to gelatin in which a hot solution of HPMC is made and cold stainless steel pins are used to dip into the polymer bath. In order to produce HPMC capsules this way, a gelling agent and gelling promotion agent are needed to provide the film formation. HPMC is not self-gelling like gelatin. The added gelling agent combines individual strands of HPMC into longer polymer chains. These large strands are net negative (anionaically) charged which requires the use of a gel promoter like potassium chloride to balance the charge and make even larger chains that have enough size to deposit on the cold stainless steel pins.

As customers globally tested the first generation HPMC capsules and experienced the variability, it was clear an alternative process was needed in which gelling systems were not used. That was the genesis of Capsugel® Vcaps® Plus which was created through a proprietary manufacturing process that eliminated the need of either a gelling agent or gel promoter – only HPMC and water. Capsugel® Vcaps® Plus are free from variability related to either pH value or ionic strength of the dissolution media.

I've been using DR caps from pure capsules for a few years

This company is amazing

This company is amazing. They have acid resistant capsules, which I can put my medication in, and have literally been a life-saver. God Send for cUTI long term medication

These have been a god send. My long term medication for CUTI (hiprex and antibiotics) are very difficult to take as harsh on the tummy causing nausea, burning, reflux etc. If i encapsulate them in the enteric coated capsules they don't release until they hit the small intestine so all them nasty side effected no longer happen. Without these i wouldn't be able to stay on my medication and be extremely unwell so I am very grateful these are available!
